Bike Safety Rules Every Child Should Know by Heart

Children can't judge traffic — their brains literally can't process car speeds until about age ten. What they can do is memorize rules until the rules do the thinking for them. These seven are the core set.

1. Helmet on before the wheel moves. 2. Stop at every road, every time — feet down, look left-right-left. 3. Never ride out from between parked cars. 4. See and be seen: bright clothes, and lights at dusk. 5. Ride predictably — no swerving, no sudden turns without looking.

Rules memorized young become reflexes for life.

6. One person per bike, no riding double. 7. If you can't see a driver, the driver can't see you. Make these a chant before every ride for a month; by week two you'll catch them correcting you.

Pair the rules with gear that makes them easy to follow: a properly fitted helmet like the Kids Bicycle Helmet Rose | XJD and a bell. When safety is a habit instead of a lecture, kids carry it onto every bike they'll ever ride.
