Kids' Bike Helmets: Fit Guide That Actually Works

Most kids wear helmets that fit badly — too loose, too far back, or buckled for style rather than function. A correct helmet fits in three specific ways, and this guide shows you how to check each one.

Position first: the helmet should sit level, covering the top of the forehead — you should see the edge when your child looks up. Two-finger test: no more than two fingers between eyebrow and helmet brim. Strap test: the V of the side straps should sit just under the ear, and only one or two fingers should fit under the chin strap when buckled.

Level, snug, and buckled every single ride — no exceptions.

Sizing: measure head circumference just above the eyebrows. Toddler sizes run 46–51 cm like the XJD Adjustable Toddler Bike Helmet – Pink Flowers XS models; kids' sizes run 48–55 cm; youth 52–58 cm. An adjustable dial at the back fine-tunes the fit as your child grows.

Finally, replace the helmet after any crash where it hit the ground — the foam is designed to crush once. And let your child pick the color: a helmet they love gets worn without a daily argument.
