Hand-Me-Down Bikes: How to Refresh One Properly

A well-made kids' bike survives three children easily — if you know which twenty minutes of maintenance actually matter before passing it down.

Start with the chain: clean it with a rag, relube, and check for stretch with a ruler — 12 full links should measure exactly 12 inches. Then the cables: brake and gear cables stretch with use; a quarter-turn of the barrel adjuster usually restores crisp braking. Tires crack with age even without riding; replace any tire with visible sidewall cracks.

New bar tape or grips cost almost nothing and make an old bike feel new.

Check the helmet too — and this is the one thing you should NOT hand down if it has taken a hard impact. A fresh certified helmet like the Kids Bike Helmet & Protective Gear Set – Black | XJD protects the next head properly. With chain, cables, grips, and helmet refreshed, the second sibling gets a bike that rides like new for the cost of a pizza.
