Practice Drills That Build Real Bike-Handling Skills
Once a child can ride in a straight line, skills plateau fast unless practice gets playful. These six drills — invented by kids, refined by coaches —build real handling while feeling like games.
1. The Slow Race: last one to the finish line wins. Slow riding demands more balance than speed ever will. 2. The Slalom: water bottles spaced 2 meters apart; weave without touching. 3. The Stop Box: chalk a square — one attempt to stop fully inside it, feet down.
Slow races teach more balance than a month of riding.
4. The Look-Back: ride a straight line while calling out how many fingers you hold up behind them — the foundation of shoulder-checking. 5. The One-Hand Salute (age 7+): ten meters with one hand, then a hand signal. 6. The Obstacle Pickup: grab a cone off the ground at walking pace — balance at its purest.
Fifteen minutes of drills before a normal ride, twice a week, transforms a passenger into a cyclist. Do them on whatever bike fits — a nimble 16 or 20-inch like the Boys Bike Black | XJD makes the games easier — and let the child invent drill number seven. Ownership is the retention secret.
