How to Clean a Kids' Bike So It Lasts for Years
Dirt, juice, and playground dust grind into chains and bearings like sandpaper. A proper wash every few weeks — done correctly — is the highest-leverage maintenance there is.
The safe method: never aim water at bearings (hub, bottom bracket, headset). Use a bucket of soapy water, a soft brush, and low-pressure rinsing. Degrease the chain with a rag and chain-cleaner, scrub the cassette or freewheel with an old toothbrush, then rinse everything downward.
Water pressure is the enemy — buckets, not hoses, at bearings.
Dry with a towel, then bounce the bike a few times to shake water out of the frame. Immediately relube the chain — one drop per roller, backpedal, wipe the excess. A wet, unlubed chain rusts overnight into orange regret.
While you're at it, do the visual audit: cracks in the tire sidewalls, fraying cables, play in the headset (front brake on, rock the bike — any knocking means adjustment). Fifteen extra minutes keeps a quality bike like the XJD Girls Bike Blue in the family for a decade of siblings.
