Training Wheel Bikes: Choosing the Right Starter
The training-wheel bike remains the classic first pedal bike — a format that works beautifully when you choose and adjust it correctly. This is the buyer's and setup guide.
The right starter has four marks: 14 or 16-inch wheels for most 3–5 year olds; a sturdy but light frame; coaster or easy-reach hand brakes; and proper steel training wheel brackets — not plastic. Models like the XJD Girls Bike Peach hit all four, with the accessories kids love (baskets, doll seats) that turn a machine into 'my bike.'
The basket isn't decoration — it's the reason she'll choose to ride.

See the XJD Girls Bike Peach for current colors and sizing.
Setup is where most starters go wrong: seat low enough for flat feet, training wheels set 5 mm off the ground (the bike should lean slightly side to side — see our setup article), and brakes checked before the first ride. Check the training-wheel bolts monthly; vibration loosens them.
Exit strategy from day one: raise the training wheels progressively as confidence grows, and plan the removal party around age 4–5 on grass. The starter phase is a season or two of pedal practice — balance finishes the story the balance-bike kids started earlier, and either path arrives at the same joyful place.
